In 2025, the City brought its annual tree giveaway program in house, building on previous Take Root events delivered in partnership with Forests Canada.
The Community Tree Giveaway gave residents the opportunity to receive up to two free native trees for their property. Of the 1,200 trees available, nearly all were reserved during pre-registration, and more than 1,000 were distributed on pick-up day. Remaining trees were added to the City’s broader planting efforts, supporting the goals of the One Canopy Strategy. It also supports our commitment to being a leader in climate action.
Data collected on tree species and participant feedback is being used to strengthen future events.
Supporting tree planting on private property is essential to achieving canopy targets. Approximately 48 per cent of Guelph’s existing tree canopy, and most opportunities for future growth, are located on private land. Increasing participation in programs like this will be key to reaching the City’s goal of 40 per cent canopy cover.
The program also provides an opportunity for staff and community partners to share information about tree care, canopy benefits, and related initiatives, including the Healthy Landscapes program and rain garden rebates offered by REEP Green Solutions. Providing trees at no cost helps reduce financial barriers and supports broader participation in greening efforts. This contributes to a more resilient urban forest and supports the City’s climate action goals.
